Frontier Renewable Resources LLC are a joint venture of Mascoma Corporation, a company which has developed proprietary technology for the production of ethanol from cellulosic feedstock, and J.M. Longyear LLC, a natural resource management company with large forestry resources near the Great Lakes. Frontier proposes to install a new 40 million gallons per year plant in Kinross, Michigan. The project has financial support from the State of Michigan as well as Federal grants.
Baisch performed a study and pre-engineering for the project (FEL2 and FEL3) which are complete and accepted by Federal Authorities. The next phase will be the plant construction and start-up.
During the study work, Baisch also performed detail engineering for Mascoma for the scale-up from a pilot plant to a demonstration plant in Rome, New York.
Confidential Client
Baisch performed a comparative study for differing concepts of new enzyme plants, comparing large central plants with smaller plants located near customers. For four greatly differing sizes, the study compared total plant installation costs, operating costs, and overall viability of concept.
The client's standards for plant equipment and construction were compared with optimized standards developed by Baisch. The Baisch developed standards resulted in a reduction of total plant installed costs of nearly 40%.
The study also afforded some interesting insights into economies of scale.
